Chess Team Final Success: Speed Chess Champion

Patch Article

This past Saturday, the Bloom Township Chess Team participated in a final End-of the-Season online tournament hosted by Rockford (Gilliford), Palatine, and Bloom Township.  This was the first time an event of this magnitude was held after the state tournament.
For the first time in many years, Bloom Township placed 6th overall in the team tournament.  Here are the results:
Final Record: 3-1
Rd 1: Defeated Niles West (B Team) 30-16
Rd 2: Defeated Buffalo Grove 33-13  (after BG team was disqualified)
Rd 3: Lost to Oak Park River Forest 18.5-27.5
Rd 4: Defeated Maple Park (Kaneland) 26-20
Then in the afternoon our players got to participate in the first ever statewide Speed Chess (Blitz) tournament.  Congratulations goes out to senior Orlando Baez who is the 2021 Champion of Blitz in the state of Illinois!  Orlando defeated players from Naperville Central (2), Evanston, Buffalo Grove, and Glenbrook North to win the title!  This is the first time since the 1990’s BT has had an individual win an individual tournament!
Huge thank you’s to Erik from Rockford and Sean from Palatine who were willing to put this together (at no cost to the schools).  Online chess will continue to grow and be used in future seasons.  The online site is if anyone is interested in checking it out!
Thank you all for your support throughout the season – this was one for the record books in many respects!  If you know of any students who are interested in the game, please send them our way!
